Magazine Well project

I have been sucked into USPSA shooting. I have been shooting Limited-10 division with my XD-40. I liked the idea of using a magazine well but none on the market really turned me on so I got thinking about making one of my own designs. We have a small CNC milling machine at work and got playing around with some designs and finally came up with the following. This design does not require any modification to the frame of the XD, but it did require quite a bit of custom fitting to get it on there nicely and not affect the free drop of an empty magazine. This first one is made of PVC. |

It does require the use of a bumpers on the magazine. I made some magazine bumpers from some dense foam rubber and some really good double sticky tape. |

As you can see it greatly increases the open size of the magazine well. |

This was the second and most recent version of the magazine well. Its made from Delrin and required significanly less fitting than the first one, but it still is not a drop in installation I was after. |

For prototyping the Delrin is nice to work with. It machines fast and with a good sharp file you can produce some very smooth surface finishes. |

The foam bumpers works well but I made a few extra thick base pads. They add a little bit more weight to aid the magazine dropping away and are a bit thicker overall than the foam bumpers. |
